Vögelein is the story of a small, clockwork creation with wings crafted by Heinrich Uhrmacher in 1671. The catch is she needs to be wound periodically to continue living, but she can't reach the winding mechanism on her back. She befriends a boy named Jason in the current day, but has to leave because of the other occupant in his house. I'm not certain where the story is going, but I'm certainly interested enough to purchase the next four issues to find out.
I also enjoyed the frequently asked question in the back section of the comic, enlightening us about some of the details of the story that might not be readily apparent. There's also a pronunciation guide that is helpful for the Germanic names scattered throughout the issue.
Jane has stated that all five issues of the series are done at this point, so I look forward to bi-monthly doses of Vögelein. If your local store doesn't carry the issue, I recommend visiting www.vogelein.com and ordering them directly from Jane. If you're looking for something a bit different in comics, give Vögelein a try!
