Lately, I haven't been blogging any political stuff, because basically the only things that come out of my mouth can be summed up as "FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS RIGHT AND DECENT AND GOOD FOR THIS COUNTRY HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY BE EVEN ENTERTAINING THE THOUGHT OF VOTING FOR MCCAIN?!" and since that is not really constructive or persuasive to anyone, I present this excellent essay by Tim Wise on the reality of white privilege in the 2008 election.
Hey Jane,
Thanks for that - I feel your pain. Something really bad has happened to news media in this election cycle - almost anything available in the mainstream (i.e. main networks and cable news) has morphed from factual reporting to op/ed that purports to be 'journalism'.
It reminds me of the craziness of Geoffrey Feiger's campaign to be governor of Michigan - just spew out a bunch of inflammatory sound bites that have little to no basis in fact, and let your opponent trip over him/herself to untangle the mess.
It's frightening to think that a) you have to work really hard to find facts, b) most voters don't know that what's being served up is a steaming pile of opinion and propaganda, and c) wouldn't be bothered to do the work even if they did.
I'm going into hiding until election day!
